Richard II (1377-99) gold Noble ND XF45 NGC, Calais mint, as Type IA, S-1659, North-1305 (VR). Crowned king with sword and shield standing facing in ship, with French title / Floriate cross with R punched over Є in central quadrilobe; lions passant and crowns in angles. A very rare emission, this Noble must have been struck fairly early in Richard's reign as there is evidence of the reuse of Edward's dies. The obverse die was quite rusted when this coin was struck, although the reverse fared better. The majority of the devices are clear, despite the pebbled texture, as are most of the legends. An appealing coin with lovely tone, uncommonly available at auction.
