Republic gold Burgers Pond 1874 EF, KM1.2, Fr-1, Hern-B1, Fine Beard variety. Extremely rare issue featuring a well-detailed portrait, high rims and bright gold appearance from being polished. This piece was previously holed and subsequently plugged which is actually fairly common with this type as many were carried as pocket pieces or drilled and mounted to be worn as jewelry. When Thomas Burgers, the second president of the Republic, failed to convince his parliament to use this design for its gold coins, samples such as this present offering were sold off to the public at twice face value. What was once practically worthless has now become a highly sought-after collectible. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $4000 in VF, $7500 in EF, $15500 in UNC, $40000 in BU.
