Charles III lead Trial Strikes 8 Escudos Obverse & Reverse Pair 1770 MS62 & AU58 NGC, Madrid mint, cf. KM409.1. A pair of trial strikes (obverse and reverse) in lead of the 1770 die for the Madrid mint 8 Escudos. Per instructions of the king Charles III, engraver Francisco Prieto produced dies and hubs for all denominations with a new bust design in 1770. A few trial strikes such as the present and the following lot were then produced presumably to test the new master dies dated 1770 while regular issue coins with the new design were apparently minted starting in 1771 (a rare Madrid 1771 8 Escudos exists). Doubtlessly extremely rare and most interesting. A complete set of similar trial strikes including all denominations is still housed by the Museum of the Madrid mint. This and the following lot are a chance for the collector to include comparatively rare items in their collection.
