Provincia San Juan Unlisted Silver War Issue, Likely produced during the War of the Triple Alliance, fought 1865 -1870, and obviously closely aligned, as to producer, with the Colonia San Jose 1/2 Real dated 1867, this piece has not been traceable by us nor our consigner (who held it about 35 years). Struck on a well-made high-quality-silver 13.4 mm flan with deeply reeded edge, it weighs 0.875 gram and features a vertical axis. Whereas the San Jose piece has been collected as a "coin of the realm" for many years (we note North American listings over half a century ago; see KM#1), there are various other similar issues, apparently by the same famous engraver, which were not well known until Carlos Janson recently described and illustrated (and priced) them. One of those employed a reverse design very similar, and with the same words "Premio A La Aplicacion", as this present example. Whereas San Jose is located in NE Argentina near Uruguay, San Juan is in the upper central Western area. The related Janson Entre Rios specimen, shown as CJ#7 and valued at $1000 on his page 234, is also very rare. This piece is lightly toned, unflawed and nearly mint state.

Estimate: 500-1000 USD
