Joao VI Prince Regent lead Commemorative Medal 1799, Extremely Fine , Lamas-79 var., Lopes-69. Extremely Fine with attractive old toning, with a few tiny corrosion spots on the reverse. Struck by the city of Porto upon his assumption as Prince Regent in 1799. Lopes (p. 57) indicates that it was authorized by the Secretary of the State of the Affairs of the Kingdom on September 20, 1799. Lamas catalogues a silver striking of this medal, while Lopes mentions that he had seen several silver and copper examples. Presumably a trial strike, rare, and historically important.
