Joao VI copper Accession Medal ND (1816), Mint State, VC-Unl, Meili-70, Lamas-Unl. Mint State with only the slightest evidence of cabinet friction and a most pleasant chocolate color, showing a 3/4 bust of Joao VI facing left (and affectionately known as "Cara de simio = Ape head" variety in Portuguese numismatic circles) on the obverse and "VOTA PUBLICA" on the reverse. Obviously very rare, since unlisted in Lamas and Cavalcanti. Struck to commemorate Joao's V accession in 1816. Perhaps ironically, the same obverse die would be used later to strike the death medal of this short lived King.Ex. Faistauer collection (Hess Divo 5/2000, lot 564 for $6,500 CHF).
Estimate: 900-1200 USD
