Lion c/s on CAR 1/2 Real 1831-E, KM67, C17. Wonderful example for the numismatist since the assayer letter which appears as an E is obviously formed from use of an F punch which was then modified at its lower base with a horizontal extension. Where in the interaction between assayer F (who began by 1828 and was still clearly active with two escudos in 1835) and assayer E (who was certainly active in 1837 but who may well have began doing assayer work by 1833 or even 1831 IF one presumes no back-dated issues during the turbulent CAR era) this humble silver piece fits is not yet clear. Ex- Mayer collection. Very Fine host and countermark. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $240 in VF, $475 in EF. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $240 in VF, $475 in EF.
