Costa Rica
Lion Counterstamp on 1845 Medio Real, KM67. Rarest year of type. Legend shows CRESCA which was not intentionally used after 1846; apparently the 1845 was also the last year with the traditional 90.2% silver composition. For whatever reason, this denomination of CAR coinage had not been produced in CR after 1831 (and not in Honduras after the same year of 1831, nor in Guatemala after a one-year-only emission in 1824) until suddenly restarted in 1843 with a sizeable production. In Holland Wallace's extensive research for Fred Mayer of Denver, only one die was confirmed for 1845. Nicely detailed host and countermark are Very Fine which is a rare grade for this particular piece which is also the only assayer B production.
Estimate: 300-500 USD
