Guatemala
Estado de Guatemala - Provisional Real 1829 NG-M VF30 ANACS, Guatemala mint, KM 75. A remarkably problem free example os this rare necessity issue showing only even, honest wear. While KM points to a purported Quetzaltenango origin, this issue was in fact struck in Guatemala City - with silver donated by the churches - per instructions of President Mariano de Aycinena during the siege of the city by the forces of General Morazan in February of 1829. Aycinena finally surrendered on April 13 and this debased issue (.750 fineness as opposed to the 0.903 of the regular Central American Federation issues) was later recalled. This explains its current rarity albeit KM clearly overstates it (as "4 known" when in fact 10 specimens have been graded by NGC). Nevertheless, most of the surviving specimens are in holed or damaged condition so the present example is truly desirable. Ex Dana Roberts collection.
