Honduras
Intriguing 1895 Quartet of 10 Centavo Varieties, KM49 and KM55.3. By the year of 1895, Honduras' mint was producing whatever it could muster to supply some circulating coinage for the under-served populace. The standard Liberty silver types, which begun with fanfare in 1883, had long since been reduced and modified as silver supplies diminished while new dies plus viable mint equipment became the exception. In 1895, within one single denomination, there were traces of the past and trial measures which predicted the sad future. There is likely no KM55.1 if that type is described as the issue with a P in the central field as is the norm for the 1886-dated "mule" types; obviously, if one views the KM photo, you can see that the meaningless side is alone shown. Included herewithin is the standard type of 1895 with small castle (common). Three different varieties of the emergency types, all of which employed a left-over die from the single-date-of-type 1871 issue for their backside, are included. The first is the "standard" mule for 1895 with large date digits. All such pieces studied by Dana Roberts seemed to have been punched over some die with smaller date digits which ended in a final digit of "3". Third is a much scarcer variety, with small date digits, which happens to be the KM55.3 plate coin. Interestingly, prior to the Stickney -Almanzar booklet, this die was labeled the "scarce small date" type. They decided it was in fact dated "1894", a decision which is un-provable one way or the other as the final digit is not a standard Arabic numeral. It is likely a broken punch which was amended in the mint as the die was being resurrected. The central part of that final digit looks like it has a cross bar. The final piece in this lot is yet another enigma but, at least, unique to our experience. Bought from Louis Hudson, the very knowledgeable student of most Latin American silver coinages, for $250 in year 2001, this piece is like the standard large date mule but with that area, where the date should appear, not struck up. All four are VG -VF with the Hudson one being the least circulated. Interesting Study Group. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $55 in VF, $110 in EF.
