BRITISH INDIA: George III, 1760-1820, AE medal, Pud-761.1, 39mm, head of King George III right / Victory standing, writing on the shield, between two palm trees, inscribed "Pondicherry taken MDCCLXI, total expulsion of the French from India ", cuds on both sides, tiny indentations in the center on both sides, a superb example! PCGS graded PF64 BR, ex Seaby (with tag). The names Coote and Steevens, engraved by Victory on her shield, refer to the two British commanders in the successful siege and victory at Pondicherry (1760-1761). Pondicherry was returned to the French in 1763.
