Italy, Joseph Mazzini. Universal Republican Alliance. 50 Cents. Ca. 1850's. Joseph Mazzinia (1805-1872): Italian politician, journalist, and strong activist for Italian unification. Helped define modern European movement in mid 19th century for popular democracy in a republican state. Mazzini joined a number of insurrections. This note represents 50 cents given towards the establishment of "the first republic established in Europe after the issue".
