Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955) was one of the greatest philanthropists of the 20th century. A life-long friend of the arts, he supported many museums and institutions. He put together the greatest collection of Spanish art and artifacts in America, for which he founded and built in 1904 his own museum, the Hispanic Society of America. Huntington's interest in Spain extended to numismatics, and he assembled an enormous collection of almost 40,000 coins, which spanned over 2,500 years from the pre-Roman period to the 19th century.
