CELTIC COINAGE
BRITANNIA
Corieltauvi

Gold stater 60/50 BC. North east coast type. Wreath motif with leaves facing inwards, tiny pellets in fields r. (sometimes described as head of Apollo with laurel wreath), Rev. Lunate horse to r.; disjointed charioteer's arms and crescent above, pellet and star in front, sun ornament below. 5.93 g. Van Arsdell 800-7. BMC 187. Ev. B2. SCBC 28. Extremely rare, from previously unrecorded dies. Almost extremely fine.

Ex Chris Rudd List 87, 2006. Nr. 41.Rudd writes : " The little dots embedded in the wreath pattern are probably more than just a celator's space-filler. I suspect they may represent gold coins. Dr. John Sill says "This piece was struck at the first of the two principal early Corieltauvi mints shortly before it switched from striking right-facing to left-facing reverse type, and, unusually, is from a hitherto unrecorded pair of dies. The reverse of this particular variety features a star in front of the horse; usually there is a whorl or or pellet below the horse's neck as well, but here the field is plain"
