HMS Courageous was built as a Courageous Class cruiser and served in the First World War. Converted into an aircraft carrier capable of carrying 48 aircraft, she was on patrol in the Western Approaches, off the coast of Ireland, when, on 17 September 1939, she was attacked and sunk by the U-29, with the loss of 519 crew.
