Kyrenaica

Kyrene, c. 500-480 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 15mm, 8.35 g). Silphium plant with a single pair of leaves, umbel and two fruits (seed pods?) hanging downwards to left and right. Rev. Two silphium fruits (seed pods?) base to base, set diagonally within an incuse square; in the blank angle, pellet. BMC p. xxiv, 17c (Berlin). Very rare. An interesting piece, crudely struck. Uncleaned as found and with its reverse struck slightly flat, otherwise, very fine.
