ROMAN & BYZANTINE COINS

Divus Augustus, died in AD 14. As (Bronze, 27mm, 11.85 g 6), struck under Titus, 80-81. DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER Radiate head of Augustus to left. Rev. IMP.T.VEST.AVG.REST. S C Eagle standing facing on globe, its head to right. Komnick 41.0. RIC 460. A superb, sharp example beautifully struck and with a fine, dark, green-brown patina. Good extremely fine.

The appearance of a restitution issue of Divus Augustus under Titus would have reminded the Roman people of the recent deification of Vespasian, the 'divine' father of the present emperor. In addition, the portrait has a distinctly 'Flavian' look, thus, suggesting a connection between the Flavians and the foundation of the Empire.
