ROMAN & BYZANTINE COINS

Trajan, 98-117, Lykia. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 32mm, 31.44 g 7), Rome, c. 113. IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P Laureate bust of Trajan to right, drapery on far shoulder. Rev. S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI / S.C Equestrian statue of Trajan to left; the horse is walking to left and the emperor holds, in his right hand, a reversed spear extending to the ground and, in his left, a statuette of Victory. Banti 197. BMC - (but see 970, fn). BN 712. Cohen 499. Hill 585. RIC -. Strack 432. A very rare type. Attractive dark green patina. Nearly extremely fine.

This very rare type seems to commemorate one of the periods of peace during Trajan's reign. The reverse shows him as a military hero carrying a small figure of Victory, but the spear in his right hand is pointed downwards at the ground, a sign that it is no longer needed.
