MEROVINGIANS
Uncertain, late 7th - early 8th century. Denier (Silver, 13mm, 1.40 g 7). Monogram of AME surmounted by a cross; to left, three pellets; to right, two pellets. Rev. BAVd..S Belfort -. MEC -. NM -. Apparently unpublished, very well struck and beautifully toned. Minor flan crack, otherwise, good extremely fine.

This enigmatic coin is at the moment a mystery: it was identified as possibly being from Melle, but the monogram used there is different, and the reverse inscription is highly uncertain. The monogram is clearly composed of the letters A, M and E: close to that used at Melle but not really truly similar. No doubt further research will reveal its secrets.
