'Abbasids
al-Mu'tamid 'alâ llah, 256-279 H./870-892 AD. Medallion in the sole name of al-Muwaffaq billâh with two identical sides, with only one unread marginal legend. 4.47 g.; Very unusual Very fine Slightly crimped

This coin was struck and not composed of two soldered bracteates as other medieval Islamic medals were produced. There is also no trace of a flattened side indicating that one side was struck after the other. Dirhams struck with the same die on both sides should present a technical impossibility which should not exist. However the present coin stands not in isolation as this phenomenon is known from Khazar dirhams in Swedish finds (e. g. Stora Velinge I) but equally from dirham within the Islamic World. The known cases always date to the second half of the 3rd century H. An old attempt of an Iranian numismatist to read the marginal legend is enclosed.
