CHILE. War of the Pacific Medal, 1884.
98.3 mm. Bronze. Allegorical scene of Chile seated, receiving tribute from Peru and Bolivia who kneel before her, images of industry and commerce around, legend in exergue: "CHILE/ EN PAZ CON EL/ PERU I BOLIVIA/ 1884", signed in small letters: "Monnehay & Codard Graveurs/ Paris (at left) Louis Bottee Sculpteur (at right)"; Reverse: Victorious Chilean condor and victory figures above defeated Peru and Bolivia, inscription: "CHILE EN GUERRA CONTRA EL PERU I BOLIVIA", signatures of engraver and manufacturer Tablet naming battles in exergue, edge lettered: "EJECUTADA POR ORDEN DE Fco ECHAURREN EN 1885". Francisco Echaurren was prominent in the Chilean Parliament whose focus in the 1880's was to honor the veterans and help the widows and orphans of the Pacific War. The French medal firm also stamped "CUIVRE" (copper) on the edge. Housed in the original, but slightly tattered leather and maroon plush presentation case with gold Chilean arms stamped on the cover. Choice bronze finish with dusky golden highlights. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
