Naxos was founded in 735 B.C. by inhabitants Ionians and Dorians, and it was the first colony in Sicily. It is little known about the Archaic period and the first historical records date back to 495 BC when the tyrant of Gela Hippocrates, won against numerous poleis of Sicily. In 403 BC, Dionysios I occupied the city of Naxos, sacked and razed to the ground. The few surviving inhabitants populating the city of Tauromenion.
