Euainetos was one of the most ancient engravers, working in Catania, with the design of the river god Amenanos, in Kamarina, with a sketch of the river god Hipparis, and Syracuse with the famous head of the nymph Arethusa. The artist was the model for other famous engravers including Kimon. Perhaps the decadrachm was struck to celebrate the naval victory of Syracuse against Athens in 413 BC.
