Ex Classical Numismatic Group, Auction Triton IX, lot 719; from the John F. Sullivan Collection.

The foundation of Carthage dates back to 814-813 BC and in a short time became one of the major cities of the Mediterranean Sea. This growth caused the collision with the other centers, especially those of Sicily. The first clash occurred in 580 B.C. when Pentathlos tried to expel the Carthaginians from the island. In 410 BC, Hannibal conquered many Greek poleis: Selinos, Himera, Akragas, Gela, Kamarina. Syracuse then decided to respond to the attack. There were followed several clashes with alternating victories until the arrival of the Romans in 278 BC
