COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, BRITISH HISTORICAL MEDALS, Scarborough Exhibition, Joseph Davis General Manager, Silver Medal, undated and un-named, town arms, rev wreath, 44.5mm. Good very fine with dark tone, rare.
The medal almost certainly for the Fishery and Marine Exhibition, 1895, an exhibition unlisted by Leslie I. Allen. In 1894 John Woodall (1831-1905) commissioned local architect J Caleb Petch (1853-1921) to design an exhibition hall that could accommodate 5000 people. It was built on Foreshore specifically to hold this major sea fisheries exhibition covering every imaginable aspect of fishing. It was formally opened 31 May 1895 by General Sir Evelyn Wood, VC, Prime Warden of the Fishmongers' Company.
