On 29 August 1968, Crown Prince Harald married Miss Sonja Haraldsen from Vinderen in Oslo Cathedral after a nine year wait for approval for permission for the Crown Prince to marry a commoner. Harald succeeded to the throne on 17 January 1991, on the death of his father.
