This dinar is a rare witness of the Umayyad presence in Spain before the creation of the Emirate of Cordoba by Abd al-Rahman in 756 CE. The conquest of the peninsula began in 711 with the victory of Guadalete. In a few years, the greatest part of the peninsula came under Muslim control. In many cases the popular classes, which were often badly treated by the Visigoth kings, were happy to change. From 720, the governors of al-Andalus emancipated themselves more and more from the caliphs of Damascus. Taxes and tribute were no longer systematically sent to Damascus.
