In the early years of Islam, al-Yamama was a region of Najd with its centre in Hajr. It was an oasis of palm groves and gardens (riyad), to the east of al-Riyad, today's capital of Saudi Arabia. In addition to these, it appears that there were silver and gold mines and Hajr was described as the "centre of al-Yamama and the seat of its amirs". This set of silver coins, of all the known dates from the al-Yamama mint, provides confirmation of the later historical record. The coins of AH 168-169 bear the name of 'Abd Allah bin Sa'id. This official served as governor of al-Yamama with his seat in Hajr. He was dismissed from this office by the ephemeral caliph Musâ al-Hadi before his death in AH 170 and the accession of his half brother Harun al-Rashid. For unknown reasons the mint of al-Yamama was then closed, never to open again.
