Designed by Huguenin and struck by Cendre & Métaux in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, this one-ounce piece is the first one-ounce coin to depict the holy sites of Islam. Today, more than 13 million Muslims make the annual Pilgrimage to Mecca, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Hundreds of thousands of believers also travel each year to Medina, home to the tomb of the Prophet. It was here that Muhammad's first companions gathered after He left Mecca, marking the start of the Hegira (622 of the Common Era).
