ISLAMIC COINS, LOCAL NORTH AFRICAN ISSUE, Tahir, Silver Half Weight Dirham, Madinat Barqa 211h, obv field Tahir, rev field pellet between two book ends/-/bakh, 1.48g. Very fine, extremely rare and completely unrecorded.
This previously unrecorded silver coin is the earliest known from the Cyranaican mint of the town of Barqa, located not far from today's Benghazi. While the denomination is not clearly specified in the marginal legend, its weight and small size mark it as a genuine ½-Dirham. This sheds an interesting new light on the numismatic history of Libya.
Estimate: £1500-2000
