ISLAMIC COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, EGYPT, Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby (1734-1810), Silver Tribute Medal of the Highland Society of London to the 42nd Regiment, 1801, by G F Pidgeon, bust right, ... IN EGYPTO CECIDIT VICTOR, rev (after Benjamin West), Highlander with sword drawn, captures the standard of the French Imperial Legion, Gallic legend, engraved Gallic inscription on edge, 49mm, suspension loop and (brass) ring (BHM 512; Eimer 932; BBM (1988) 42; MYB 83). Very fine.
Abercromby had been chosen to command the invasion of Egypt. Two weeks after landing the French attacked the British army outside Alexandria. Abercromby was mortally wounded and though initially saved by soldiers of the 42nd Regiment - the Black Watch, he died shortly after on the flagship HMS Foudroyant and was buried at Malta. The Highland Society of London presented the Regiment with a plate to the value of 100-Guineas, and the silver medal was given to all ranks and officers or, if killed, their next of kin. The engraved edge legend "O'n Chomun Chaelaich don Fhreiceadan Dubhna XLII Rt., translates as "From the London Highland Society to the Black Watch 42nd Regiment".

Estimate: £350-400
