ISLAMIC COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, EGYPT, Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby (1734-1810), Copper Tribute Medal, 1801 (struck 1820), by T Webb, for Mudie's National Medals, half-length uniformed bust, head turned to left, rev horse before the Great Pyramids, ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH ARMY IN EGYPT, 41mm (BHM 504; Eimer 929). Extremely fine.
Abercromby had been chosen to command the invasion of Egypt. Two weeks after landing the French attacked the British army outside Alexandria. Abercromby was mortally wounded and died shortly after on the flagship HMS Foudroyant and was buried at Malta.
