The Institut d'Égypte was established by Napoleon to carry out research during his Campaign in Egypt and was run by Gaspard Monge and Edme-François Jomard. It's activities resumed in 1836 under the name of The Egyptian Society and it transferred to Alexandra in 1859, from whence this medal dates. In 1880 it moved back to Cairo. Sadly it became a victim of the Egyptian Revolution and was burnt down in December 2011. It is reported that Sheikh Sultan al Quassimi, governor of the Emirate of Sharjah, has promised to pay for the reconstruction of the building.
