PERSIA, Achaemenid Empire. temp. Artaxerxes II to Darios III. Circa 375-336 BC. AR Eighth Siglos (10mm, 0.72 g). Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, holding spear in right hand, bow in left / Patterned incuse punch. Cf. Carradice Type IIIb Late for type (no silver issues known); Meadows, Administration –; BMC –; Sunrise 26 corr. (dating and references; this coin). VF, toned, a bit rough. Extremely rare.

From the Sunrise Collection.

The differentiation of the Type IIIb groups is dependent upon the appearance of the lower drapery on the obverse figure, which is not visible on this specimen. Since the publication of Sunrise, however, another example, lot 101 in CNG E-313, appeared that was struck from the same reverse punch as this coin. The drapery on that coin clearly shows that these coins are from Type IIIb Late, not IIIb A/B. These fractional issues are apparently the only silver coins known from this series, among the latest of the royal Achaemenid coinage.
