WORLD COINS, GERMANY German States. Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Prince Friedrich Karl (1790-1793). Silver Thaler, 1791-ICK (Saalfeld). One year type. Bust of the prince right. Rev. Crowned shield flanked by "Wildman" (KM 734; Dav 2772; Fischer 586). In NGC holder graded MS65 Prooflike, very sharply struck with somewhat frosty central devices contrasting with wholly prooflike, blazingly lustrous fields. Extremely rare this nice, the only one so graded but we doubt any specimen extant can have greater visual appeal
ex FDC Collection

This coin could easily be mistaken for a Proof and it may well be by 18th Century standards. Consultation with three well known Thaler specialists has confirmed that at the very least it is of "Specimen" status, ie a coin struck for special purpose, most likely presentation. NGC has graded it MS65 PL as concession to its grand quality, though even this high numerical grade seems quite conservative..

Estimate: $ 5,000
