WORLD COINS, POLAND Johann III, Sobieski (1629-1684-1696). The Eternal Peace Treaty, between Poland and Russia, 1686. Bronze Medal, 66mm. By Giovanni Battista Guglielmada. Crowned and enrobed bust of Sobieski right. Rev. Sobieski standing clasping hands with the Tsarevna Sophia Alexeevna, their feet on up-turned crescent moon (Turkey), PAX FVNDATA CVM MOSCHIS, in exergue DECENNALIA AVG (Sokolov 39; cf H-Cz 2523). A sharply struck medal, extremely fine with rich patination.
This treaty confirmed the earlier Treaty of Andrusova, 1667, where Russia and Poland agreed control of separate parts of Ukraine and also not to enter into future treaties with the Turks. The pact was highly important in the Eastern European struggle against Turkish Tartars as, by signing it, Russia joined the anti-Turkish coalition of Poland, the Holy Roman Empire and Venice.
An example with a silvered surface was sold in Baldwin's Auction 87, lot 1870, for £7440Very rare.

Estimate: $ 7,000.
