*Charles II, First Milled Coinage, broad, 1662 (issued in March / April), by Thomas Simon, laureate, cuirassed bust left, small horizontal s below, rev., crowned straight-sided shield, florent concordia regna 1662 around, 9.06g (Lessen type G2/3; cf SCBI Schneider 421; N. 2780; S.3337A), flan irregularity at 1-2 o'clock, small dig to right of shield, otherwise good very fine Previously thought to be patterns, research suggests that pieces dated 1662 were issued for a very short period as currency coins, whilst similar specimens dated 1660 and 1661 were made as commemorative medals (see Lessen, M., Simon's Mill Gold Coins and Medals of Charles II, 1660-2, in BNJ 65 (1995), pp. 151-168). The nominal weight of the coin was 140.49gr. (9.10g) so the present specimen is of good weight in spite of the irregular flan. This would seem to support the view that it was intended as a circulating coin, not a pattern or medal.
Estimate: £2500 - 3000
