SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 B.C. AR Decadrachm (43.01 gms), ca. 400-390 B.C.
Gallatin-D.ll/R.lX. Signed dies of Euainetos. Fast quadriga driven left by female charioteer leaning forward with a kentron in right hand and reins in left hand, Nike flying right to crown her, heavy exergual line and panoply of arms below; Reverse: Head of Arethusa left wearing barley wreath, four dolphins around, delta below jaw. The ethnic for Syracuse is especially prominent interspersed through her hair. Euaineto's signature is off the flan however. Some scattered chatter on the reverse. Typically these dies show a lot of wear or rust, yet the obverse of this piece is especially clean and well struck. Light marks on face and minor evidence of smoothing on neck. An attractive and affordable example of this highly desirable type. BOLD VERY FINE.
Purchased in private treaty from Elias Padros ca. 1977.
Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
