MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III (the Great) 336-323 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.09 gms), Memphis Mint, ca. 332-323 B.C.
Pr-3971; Muller-124. Head of Heracles right wearing lion's scalp; Reverse: Zeus enthroned left holding scepter and eagle, rose in left field. It was in Memphis at the Temple of Ptah that Alexander was crowned as Pharaoh. Memphis is the only mint in all of Egypt to issue Tetradrachms in the name of Alexander, for that matter it is one of only two mints in all of Africa to do so, the second being Cyrene. Upon Alexander's death, his body was of course brought to Memphis by Ptolemy I. It was customary for the Macedonian king to attain their right to the throne through burial of their predecessor. This is one of the ways that Ptolemy ensured that Egypt was his. Alexander's body was later moved to Alexandria under Ptolemy II. An nice example of one of the most sought after Tetradrachms of Alexander the Great. Nice round flan. Fine artistic style in high relief. Two light scratches on reverse. Some minute surface porosity, otherwise EXTREMELY FINE.
Estimate: $2000.00- $2500.00
