MEXICO. Veracruz. Cast Silver Proclamation Medal, 1701. Philip V (1701-46). VERY FINE.
29.7 mm; 9.63 gms. Gr-PV-9; Med-3; Her-7; Betts-91. VERY RARE. Armored bust of Philip V right; Reverse: Arms of Veracruz. According to a letter dated May 15th 1701, a number of silver medals were thrown from a platform by Lucas de Llano Salazar after oath taking ceremonies which occurred on April 11th 1701. The only specimen of this medal we have encountered. We are aware of one other which is the Medina, Herrera and Grove plate medal (all the same medal) which is housed in the Academia de la Historia, Madrid. The prototype for the portrait of this medal was undoubtedly the 1701 medal of Mexico City (Grove-PV-1), which in turn was modeled from the 1700 Philip V proclamation of Cadiz (VQ-12899). Deep, rich old toning.
VERY FINE.
