MEXICO. Mexico City. Cast and Chased Silver Proclamation Medal, 1724. Luis I (1724). EXTREMELY FINE.
38.9 mm; 20.5 gms. Gr-LI-1; Med-6; Her-19; Betts-150. VERY RARE. Armored draped bust of Philip V right; Reverse: Arms of Mexico City. According to a letter sent by Viceroy Marques de Casafuerte dated August 20th 1724, medals were thrown from a platform by senior ministers to the noble people of Mexico City during the proclamation ceremonies on July 25th 1724. Well executed bold design. The basic obverse of this medal served as the prototype in producing a mold for the VERY RARE San Felipe el Real medal of Luis I. A remarkably fine quality cast that shows no evidence of being chased. The normal quality for this medal is very fine and often examples that appear on the market have been holed or repaired. A pleasing highly original example that is in extraordinary condition for the type. Nicely toned and an excellent example of this early Mexican medal. Bold attractive portrait. EXTREMELY FINE.
