MEXICO. Mexico City. Cast Silver Proclamation Medal, 1724. Luis I (1724). VERY FINE.
30.15 mm; 11.38 gms. Gr-LI-5; Med-unlisted; Her-unlisted; Betts-unlisted. Bust of Luis I left; Reverse: Arms of Mexico City. According to a letter sent by Viceroy Marques de Casafuerte dated August 20th 1724, medals were thrown from a platform by senior ministers to the noble people of Mexico City during the proclamation ceremonies on July 25th1724. It is however unknown if medals of this type were part of that dispersal. A largely unpublished piece and even the listing in Grove is a line drawing. EXTREMELY RARE and the only example we are aware of, other than the Perez Maldonado plate coin, which is a line drawing. This very interesting three quarters facing portrait which portrays the king wearing a hat is unique to Mexico City for the medals of Luis I. For Luis I it is found only on this medal as well as the large 61mm gilt silver medal (Grove-LI-4) which is unique. With the exception of the medals of Zacatecas which have left facing portraits, these are the only portrait types of Luis I that deviate from the standard right facing portrait. Lightly chased, attractive toning that darkens in the peripheral areal, pierced at 12 o'clock for suspension.
CHOICE VERY FINE.
