MEXICO. San Felipe el Real (Chihuahua). Cast Silver Proclamation Medal, 1724. Luis I (1724). VERY FINE.
26.95 mm; 18.65 gms. Gr-L1-12; Med-10; Her-25; Betts-153. EXTREMELY RARE, the only other example of this medal we are aware of is housed in the Banco de Mexico Museum cabinet, with another reported in a private collection in Mexico. Draped bust of Luis I right; Reverse: Crowned arms, inscription below: "S. PHE. EL REAL" for San Felipe el Real. A high quality cast, however lacking in some detail as these medals were created using a 1724 Mexico City medal of Luis I (Grove-LI-1) with a locally rendered reverse as the "madre" or "mother coin". Hence the reverse has clearer and more refined legends than the obverse. Nicely executed cast. Toned and attractive. VERY FINE.
