MEXICO. Yucatan. Cast and Chased Silver Proclamation Medal, 1724. Luis I (1724). VERY FINE.
25.7 mm; 5.42 gms. Gr-L1-16 (plate coin); Med-13; Her-23; Betts-156. EXTREMELY RARE and probably UNIQUE, the only example that we have seen. Bust of Luis I right; Reverse: Arms of Merida. The medals produced in the Yucatan during this period are all unique to one degree. Although cast from the same basic "madre" or "mother coin" (Grove LI-16/17), the legends were then hand engraved after the medal was chased. Virtually every known medal has legend variants that deviate in one way or another. In some cases the medals are only engraved on the obverse, while in other cases they are engraved on both sides. Due to their hand made nature variants and abbreviations also occur. The example offered here is engraved on both sides. Obverse: "S.D.I.R. 1724" for Senor Don Luis Rex - 1724. Reverse: "YUCA – TAN", hyphenated Yucatan. Similar to Grove-LI-17 but with different obverse and reverse lettering. A lovely high grade and un-holed example.

VERY FINE.

From the John Adams Collection.
