MEXICO. Veracruz. Cast Silver Proclamation Medal, 1747. Ferdinand VI (1746-59). CHOICE VERY FINE.
30.15 mm; 16.56 gms. Gr-F6-37; Med-52; Her-68; Betts-372. Armored draped bust of Ferdinand VI right; Reverse: Arms of Veracruz. EXTREMELY RARE, only the third example of this medal we are aware of (one of which is holed). In the case of Veracruz there is a letter from the council dated May 17th 1747, giving reports of the ceremonies conducted on April 10th 1747. There are two accounts of the distribution of medals during the proclamation ceremonies. The first is of Jose de Zavaleta who threw silver medals to the people from his window. The second is of Governor Antonio Salas who threw them to the crowd from a platform. It is unknown which medals were distributed by which individual, but likely the medal in question are Grove-F6-36 and Grove-F6-37. This medal was modeled directly after the 1724 Veracruz medal of Luis I (Grove-LI-14). Proper alterations were made insuring the correction of the date and king's name prior to casting. Of slightly less defined details than the 1724 Luis medal, as loss of definition occurs when using a cast medal as the "madre" or "mother coin". A nicely executed medal produced in relatively high relief. Although simplistic in design and style, it is quite well produced with its rudimentary artistry remaining part of its charm. Lightly chased surfaces accented with light grey-gold toning. Bold and very attractive.

CHOICE VERY FINE.

From the John Adams Collection.
