MEXICO. Oaxaca. Silver Proclamation Medal, 1760. Charles III (1759-88). CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
35.0 mm; 10.58 gms. Gr-K-40; Med-97; Her-unlisted; Betts-unlisted. VERY RARE, we are aware of only four examples of this medal (this being the finest). Armored draped bust of Charles III right wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece. Crowned arms of Oaxaca. A very interesting stuck medal that is clearly of local manufacture. Most likely produced by a local silversmith who designed this portrait style based on using the 1760 Mexican portrait gold coinage of Charles III as his portrait model. Some catalogers have speculated the silversmiths name could be "Grandellana", as this name appears below the local arms on the reverse. A very neatly applied laurel edge has been applied (possibly by hand). A highly lustrous a very attractive medal that is remarkably well preserved. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
From the John Adams Collection.
