ARGENTINA. Buenos Aires. Cast Silver Proclamation Medal, 1747. Ferdinand VI (1746-59). VERY FINE.
31.3 mm; 15.56 gms. Med-16; Her-35; Rosa-1 (referencing this piece); Betts-338. EXTREMELY RARE, one of only two examples known to exist, the other of which is house in Real Academia de la Historia "Royal Academy of History" (see Medina pg.1; Rosa-pg.18). Armored bust of Ferdinand VI right; Reverse: Two ships at sea with eagle above and anchor in foreground. Large feasts were held in the city of Buenos Aires for the proclamation ceremonies. The governors of the province Jose de Andonaegui and Alferez Real nominated Francisco Rodriques to oversee the ceremonies which took place November 10th 1747. In doing so, Francisco Rodriques distinguished himself by his generosity in covering part of the major costs incurred (Rosa pg.18). Undoubtedly, medals were thrown to the crowd as a part of the proclamation ceremonies. In total, only four medals are known to exist from this event. The medal offered here is believed to be UNIQUE in private hands, with a second example housed in the Real Academia de la Historia. A third medal, which is also offered as part of John Adams collection, is also known and presumed unique (Ex: Bosco 1997). Although similar to this medal it is clearly of different style size and manufacture. The fourth medal, also unique and housed in the Real Academia de la Historia is smaller in diameter and of a totally different reverse design (central design eagle with date below), about the size of a 1 Real. This piece is interesting as it has the name "Tomas Joesph Gonazalver" for the reverse legend. In this catalogers opinion, the Gonazalver medal shows clear evidence that some of the proclamations for this ceremony were either produced by different individuals, or produced from metal donated by specific parties. Hence out of the four medals known, there are three different types. An incredibly important medal, as the proclamation medals for Ferdinand VI are the first medals ever produced in Argentina. Small thick planchet with beveled edge. Toned. VERY FINE.

From the John Adams Collection.
