COLOMBIA. Santa Fe de Bogota. Cast Silver Proclamation Medal, 1724. Luis I (1724). EXTREMELY FINE.
20.4 mm; 3.11 gms. Med-11; Her-unlisted; Restrepo-pg.104; Betts-154. Crude bust of Luis I left; Reverse: Spread eagle head left. Historically significant, as this represents one of the first "struck" proclamation medals of Latin America. A very interesting piece that was stuck from locally produced dies. Stylistically very similar to hand hammered European coinage. EXTREMELY RARE with only one other example know. Prior to the discovery of the example offered here (Coin Galleries 1981), this medal was believed to be unique. The only other known example is the plate coin in Medina, which is from the collection of Manuel Vidal Quadras y Ramon. A very important offering as this is the first proclamation Medal of Colombia. Pierced at twelve o'clock. EXTREMELY FINE.
From the John Adams Collection.
