Specimens and Descriptions of Perkins and Fairman's Patent Siderographic Plan, to Prevent Forgery. Being the Report as made to the Commissioners For preventing the Forgery of Bank Notes. London, Dec., 1819. Bound in Full Black Morocco. Superb; Internally Fine.
Another superbly crafted bound volume in full black morocco by Sam Ellenport. Exceedingly rare and important. This is currently considered the sole example in private hands. One of sixty copies produced (see pVI introductory text), including this copy, with two being institutional library copies that are verified (Cambridge University, England and University of Glasgow, Scotland). The content, though cerebral, contains important correspondences during this period of Bank of England contract negotiations and trials with firms to better the security of the "Pound Note" known and used worldwide and through their Empire. Here, hopefully furthering Perkins and Fairman's aims towards to it and the lucrative Bank of England contract work. There are six engraved plates and those of course will be very appealing to British and world banknote collectors. Octavo, 15cm by 24cm. Full black morocco, gilt embossed edge ruling both covers. Spine with two raised bands, gilt titled PATENT SIDEROGRAPHIC PLAN 1819. Black and white inside cover marbled end papers. Half title and full title page. Intro [V], VI, VII, 45pp. Six plates (one folding). D. Cartwright, Printer at base p45. Six steel engraved plates follow. Plate I and IA: Bank of England Specimen notes. Vignettes and structure similar, different end lathes. Plate 2; Bank of England note, different vignettes including female profile die used on American FDU notes. Plate 3: Repeating oval Wellington dies and other duplicated die elements and lathe [note: an interesting plate and a variant used in the "Congreve"]. Plate 4: Ancient Greek bust (Socrates?) repeating in center, other Perkins, Fairman elements. [No Plate 5, and this appears to be as made; corresponding to plate structure in the Cambridge and Glasgow University library example]. Plate 6. Folding plate, into three panels, of Ancient Greek bust as last across center, top and bottom with intricate frieze panels. Gorgeous. Plates are sadly damp stained, heavily so at one upper wide corner. Text pages overall Very Fine, well embossed and original. Slight brittleness here and there, small corner chip at title pages. An integral volume with relevant ties across the pond and to Fairman's engraving work here in America. Originally, Ex Bowers & Merena Halpern-Warner Sale (for proofs the so-called "Rasmussen Sale"), March 6-7, 1997: 3166 and off the market since. A gorgeous Ellenport binding encompassing this historic security printing work. A treasure.

Estimate: $2500.00- $3500.00
