Practical View of an Invention for the Better Protecting Bank-Notes Against Forgery. Illustrated by Various Specimens. John Holt Ibbetson, Esq. London: 1820. Marbled Boards Bound in Period Quarter Calf. Very Fine.
The "1820" Ibbetson (not to be confused with "...Eccentric Circular Turning" and extremely rare. Two traced by the consignor in private hands including this impressive example. We have never seen or handled one physically until now. Medium octavo, 14.5cm by 22cm. Marbled boards, period quarter calf with embossed gilt IBBETSON ON FORGERY. Left front plate on India paper with experimental 5 Pound note. Title page with imprint of A. Hancock, Holborn at base (blank verso), 68 pages. 17 plates with one full color, additional twelve concentric circle dies on slips tipped to pages. Six plates at the end are verso endorsed "Wm. Hartley, Tenterden Street, Bury, Lancashire". Very Fine copy with some expert archival restoration. New end papers front and back. Some scattered soiling on some pages near the back. A charming book and rather underrated in our view. The concentric geometric dies displayed exhibit great technological achievement. The color plate is visually stunning. Ibbetson missed the boat and was too late to be in consideration during the Society of Arts presentations and subsequent findings. He of course was disappointed. Once again, very charming visually and with multiple Kolbe pedigrees. Resided in the library of astute North Carolina currency scholar J. Roy Pennell (he wrote the North Carolina book) at a cost of $325.00 in 1984. Later sold in 1996 Henry Morris sale by George F. Kolbe (at $770.00), and in his June 2005 Craig & Smith Library, lot 25. The only other example traced was in the Champa library, but with fewer plates. Complements the suite of Society of Arts related volumes here perfectly; forming a illustrious quintet of 1819-1821 British Security Printing books.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2500.00
